Solar Hot Water

By switching to solar energy for heating water you will save money and contribute to an environmentally and economically friendly future. Proven Energy Solutions offers an extensive line of solar hot water systems, components and services to meet all your needs large and small.

How a solar hot water system works

It is very simple. Your home will have a solar panel installed on your roof that will capture the energy from the sun, it will use that energy to heat your water and then store it for future use.

There are two types of solar hot water systems.

Active has circulating pumps and controls and Passive which does not use either. Both are fueled by the sun which is free for your use. The passive system usually is more cost effective than the active system however; it is usually not as efficient.

A solar hot water system uses a well insulated storage tank. There are one and two tank systems available for your home. A one tank solar system combines the backup heater with the solar storage in one tank. A two tank solar system, preheats the water before it enters the conventional water heater.

What will this look like on my home?

Example of a residential solar panel

Most typical single-family homes will require one or two solar collector panels placed on your homes roof. The solar panels are approximately 4 to 6 feet wide and 8 to 10 feet in length. The size of the solar panels is determined by the amount of hot water you currently using daily and the type of system being placed. A flat roof is ideal however, if dealing with a pitched roof the ideal direction the roof should face is south.
